Accumulation happens! Whatever the reason, clutter in your home may start to pile up over time. Even if you already have an organization system in place, we know it can be difficult to commit the time and energy to dealing with these piles. We also know that decision making can be particularly challenging, especially when deciding whether to keep something that carries sentimental value. Do not worry though, as our 19 years of organizing experience has helped us develop these 10 decluttering “hacks” below that will make the process much more approachable.
Create a list of smaller achievable goals rather than overarching organizational goals.
Schedule organizing sessions ahead of time and stick to that schedule.
Work in one room at a time.
Work your way through the room from Left-to-Right and Top-to-Bottom.
Create designated spaces for discarding unwanted items such as boxes labeled donate, sell, and toss.
Only handle it once! Once it is in your hands, make the decision.
Work with a partner or team that will help you maintain motivation.
Use what you have (if you love it).
Wait to buy products until AFTER you have decluttered.
Celebrate the decisions you have made and progress that comes with it!
As you are sorting, consider establishing an organization system that will make it easier for you to prevent clutter from accumulating in the future! This way, when a new item comes into your home, you will already have a home for it where similar items can be found.
